sustainable design

what is sustainable design

sustainable design is the art of designing physical objects and the built enviornment to comply with the principals of economic, social, and ecological sustainability.During the mid-70's energy crisis, many people were forced to reassess the efficiency and practicality of modern buildings. It was around this time that alternative energy systems, such as passive solar and wind technologies, first began to be used as resources.Although much of this was simply forgotten in the and material-driven 80's, experiments and research continued.

WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING
the practice of increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use of water, energy, and materials. It also reduces the buildings' impacts on human health and our enviornment, through better siting, maintenance, removal, construction, and operation.

ARCHITECTS USING SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Brenda and Robert Vale are two architects that incorporate sustainable design within their work. two major sustainable designs that the Vales worked on in the 1990's were the Automous building which is actually a house that is warmed and powered by the sun, produces its drinking water from rain, and is consistent with its historic context. The Hockerton Housing Project, which is a group of five residetial units that incorporate thermal mass and super insulation.
