design/architecture from different countries

Japanese houses have thin walls because of the mild climate and overlapping, slanted, and slightly curved roofs because of the fact that there is plenty of rain especially during early summer. Timber is the traditional building material for Japanese houses. It makes them airy which is important during the humid summer months. The disadvantages are that the houses can be damaged easily by earthquakes and fires. Today, concrete and steel are, of course, widely used as well. the interiors are usually simple and use eath tone colors to give the inside a warm and welcoming feeling.

In the late 19th century, Ponce developed its own blend of Spanish Creole and neoclassical architecture called Ponce Creole. It is characterized by the use of Corinthian columns, wrought-iron balconies, stucco siding, arched entrances, and gas lamps. It was named Creole because it reminded some of New Orleans's French Quarter. The wealth from Ponce's sugarcane industry financed most of the elegantly ornamented buildings. this syle can also be seen in other South American countries. the style of architecture is also visible in some of our states such as Florida, Texas, and California.

There were several parts to a typical Roman bathing complex:

* Apodyterium – dressing room, where the bather’s clothing was stored in cabinets and guarded by a slave
* Palaestra – an outdoor courtyard where the bather exercised, swam, or played games
* Tepidarium – a warm pool
* Caldarium – a hot pool, similar to a modern sauna
* Frigidarium – a cold pool

Orthographic View of Time Capsule

leaf drawing

all off the first are done in contour, the top one has a bit of cross hatching that i thought i would add.
the drawings in the center have some crosshatching. i tried to really focus on the detail of the leaf in these three. the first one in the center also includes some stippling.
all of the images on the right are done in blind contour. i think that i have made some great progress on this technique because i dont worry anymore about my image looking real because its not suppose to.

ten graphic/media designs

i'm not sure what this ad is trying to sell because i cant read the fine print but the arrows on the page is what got me to want to know what this is about the red lines keep my eyes moving on the page, which makes me look at the image and text, and the finally the name of the product.
first of all who wouldn't overlook this advertisement. displaying phrases that sound pleasing will get anyones attention. the image in the background give the sense that this is a great job offer because of the relaxing image. they also added the amount of money to draw people into falling for their ad.

i like this graphic advertisement due to the fact that it was kept simple. the name in the center catches my attention and i don't get distracted by other images. advertisers use this technique so that you focus on the name and you remember it
i think it is interesting how advertisers are finding new places to place their ads in hopes of gaining consumers. i think its a neat idea to put ads on the sleeves for coffee cups because it a change from those plain brown ones. i'm sure if someone hand me a coffee cup with a cool sleeve that i would be curious to see whats on it.
at first the image caught my eye because of the man on the advertisement. i think that this image is meant to get the attention of women so that we will buy their product. something that i thought was interesting about this advertisement was that it had the small lines that pointed to the center where the product name is. i thought that was a great way of leading the eye to whats important.
in class we learned about how to layout a magazine and this image caught my eye because it lined the squares up creating an imaginary line that catches our attention. another thing that was great about this was the use of color and its arrangement in a pattern. it kind of reminds me of a checker board.
i really did not like this graphic image due to the fact that it had to many things going on which made it feel too busy. if a fan for subtle graphics with some arrangement to make it feel organized. this image really hurts my eyes just looking at it.

this image of the absolute vodka is interesting due to the fact that they dressed the vodka in jewelery, which makes a silent statement that this type of vodka is for people with class and money. it also expresses that if you drink this you have attitude. the cirlce of light in the background is what makes the image stand out and draws my eye to the product.

the use of these two colors together is becoming really popular in graphic media due to the fact the the colors stand out against each other. the orange in the center of the advertisement is darker than the ones on the edge of the ad, which makes me focus more on whats in the center.

i think that thing thing that caught my attention about this image was the colors used. the blue in the back ground really made the somewhat yellow color of the camel stand out. i suppose another reason i noticed this image was because of the camel which is the well known symbol for the camel cigs. i thought it was interesting how they used the format that cigarette companies always use to catch the attention of a certain group.

two new technolgies

solar panels

Solar Panels are roof integrated tile photovoltaic systems that give homeowners and businesses a way to add solar energy to their homes and buildings using panels that blend seamlessly with the roof line. The benefit of having solar panels is that it would result in approximately 17,000 fewer tons of sulfur dioxide emissions and approximately 4,900 fewer tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxide emissions per year. Also homeowners will save up to 60% on monthly energy costs.

MINIMIZE ENERGY

Micheal Kirchmann came up with a way to build a glass hotel inIndia without subjecting his guests to heatstroke. He came up with undulating perforated-metal that minimizes the need for energy consuming air-conditioners while maximizing natural light.

ten buildings

i think that these buildings complement each other really well. it is interesting to see all of these buildings together, creating an image that is very pleasing to the eye. i think that if these three buildings weren't near each other creating this great image, then the scene wouldn't be as eye catching.

ten buildings

im not sure what the name of this building is called, but i do know that it is located in london, england. this building caught my attention, but not in a good way. i think that the shape of the building is quite interesting; the design is what throws me off. it reminds me of a wedding cake, the building would ave been better off without that design on the front.

the wind scraper

this building has an amazing design to it. the deigner of this building, which has not yet been built, wanted a building that had a constantly changing view. each floor will rotate in different directions to give it its unique images.
THE LIGHT HOUSE

this is another design for a building in production, located in dubai. not only is this building nice to look at but it is also eco friendly. dubai has been trying t ocome up with sustainable deisgntat will be constructed in the near future, an this is just one of them. the light house will reduce the total energy consumption up to 65% and water consumption up to 40%. The height and shape of The Lighthouse play major roles in its goals for low energy consumption, allowing for the instillation of three enormous wind turbines , and 4,000 photovoltaic panels on the south facing façade.

BURJ AL ARAB

This building is located on the coast of Dubai. what i find most interesting about this building is that it was built on its own platform that sits above the water. the curved shape of the building makes it look like a sail on a boat. i think that if the building wasn't actually in the water than it would'nt be that appealing to people.

THE OPUS

This building has not been constructed yet, but i think that it is a wonderful design. the building gives thee illusion that it can move and the color adds to that effect by making it appear like water. when this building is constructed it will be located in Dubai, one of the seven emirates on the southern east of the Arabian peninsula.

ten buildings

TASSLE HOTEL

This building, located in Brussels and completed in 1894 was designed by Victor Horta, an architect that specialized in Art Nouveau. this would have to be one of my favorite buildings because the inside is beautiful. art nouveau is a style that uses organic shape and forms, which makes the interior of the building seem somewhat feminine.

ten buildings

the torre pendente di pisa

i have always found early architecture to be very inerseting. i believe that the period style that the torre pendente di pisa (leaning tower of pisa) was ad in is amazing. the layered vertical columns is what catches my eye and makes the tower appaer larger in size. i think that even if the tower was not leaning that it would still be considered as one of the most amazing pieces of italian architechture.

ten buildings

Casa Mila
The first time i saw this building was when i was in Art history, and we were discussing different types of architecture as art. The Casa Mila is located in Barcelona, Spain and is considered to be art nouveau, which means new art. This building's organic and expressionistic appearance is what fascinates me most.

ten buildings

The Bank of China Tower
i chose this building not because i liked it, but because i disliked it. it caught my attention, but not in a good way. i suppose my reason for not liking this building is due to it shape. it seems unfinished from one view; i really did not like it when first i saw it. the only reason i noticed the building was bec ause it reminded me of a project that one of my class mates did; unlike the building the project was symmetrical which i liked.

ten buildings

Sidney Opera House

the Sidney opera house is another one of those buildings that seems to strike me with its appearance. located in Sindey, Austrailia, this structure is situated on the Bennelong Point on the Sidney harbor which complements the look of the building. i think that the reason the Sidney Opera House is quite pleasing to the eye is because of its layered arches and its shape, which differs from the rest of the buildings in the background.

ten buildings

30 st. Mary Axe
This building is the 30 st. Mary Axe, located in London, England. this building stood out immediately when i first saw among a bunch of other buildings. I think that it is a really interesting building from the outside, due to it dramatic and distinct appearance, and makes me curious to find out what the inside looks like.

sustainable design

what is sustainable design

sustainable design is the art of designing physical objects and the built enviornment to comply with the principals of economic, social, and ecological sustainability.During the mid-70's energy crisis, many people were forced to reassess the efficiency and practicality of modern buildings. It was around this time that alternative energy systems, such as passive solar and wind technologies, first began to be used as resources.Although much of this was simply forgotten in the and material-driven 80's, experiments and research continued.

WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING
the practice of increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use of water, energy, and materials. It also reduces the buildings' impacts on human health and our enviornment, through better siting, maintenance, removal, construction, and operation.

ARCHITECTS USING SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Brenda and Robert Vale are two architects that incorporate sustainable design within their work. two major sustainable designs that the Vales worked on in the 1990's were the Automous building which is actually a house that is warmed and powered by the sun, produces its drinking water from rain, and is consistent with its historic context. The Hockerton Housing Project, which is a group of five residetial units that incorporate thermal mass and super insulation.

sustainable design

LEED

LEED is the The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The development of LEED began around 1994, which was spearheaded by the Natural Resource Defense Council. It was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, which provides standards for enviornmentally sustainable design.LEED has worked on 14,000 projects in 50 US States and 30 countries covering 1.062 billion square feet of development area.

structural insulated panels

The use of SIPs brings many benefits and some drawbacks when compared to a conventional framed building. Well built homeS using SIPs will have a tighter building envelopes and the walls will have a higher insulative value, which leads to fewer drafts and a decrease in operating costs for maintaining a comfortable interior environment for the occupants. As a non-standard material it is more expensive to purchase SIPs and may need to be transported greater distances. Also, despite having easier installation than framed buildings, it may be necessary to hire professionals to properly assemble SIPs.

sustainable design

structural insulated panels

this is one of the products used in sustainable design today.Although foam-core panels gained attention in the 1970s, the idea of using stress skinned panels for construction began in the 1930s. Research and testing of the technology was done by Forest Products Laboratory as part of U.S. Forest Service's attempts to conserve forest resources.
SIPs are most commonly made of OSB panels sandwiched around a foam core That is made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS) or rigid polyurethane foam, but other materials can be used. Some SIPs use fiber-cement or plywood for the panels, and agricultural fiber, such as wheat straw, for the core.

sustainable design

this house was renovated using many green and sustainable principals. Most of the waste created during the project was recycled. A lot of the original building was retained and reused, and energy efficient and healthy home techniques were used to ensure that the house uses a small amount of energy and provides a healthy environment for the home ownwers. By using these sustainable techniques the end result was lower utility usage, even though the house is more than twice the size. The house is said to be practially dust free, requiring less frequent cleaning; mold and mildew have been eliminated; sound pollution from the outside is significantly reduced; drafts and cold spots have been eliminated; hot water is delivered instantly.
IEH designed a green, zero energy home for a Cape Cod beachfront property. Using solar photovoltaics and a geothermal heating system, the house is designed to produce as much energy as it uses over the course of the year. This home's shape and form mimics the surrounding land while also complementing the property's views. The interior contains a clean design, with an open great room, bedrooms and bathrooms for the extended family, as well as a private gym and home theater.

sustainable design is the art of designing physical objects an the built enviornment to comply with the principals of economic, social, and ecological sustainability.
The designers at IEH worked with a group of about 150 Cornell students to design and build an 800 square foot, off-grid solar home. The house included things such as solar panels, solar thermal, Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS), radiant floor heating, advanced home control systems, a proprietary entropy recovery ventilation system, bamboo flooring, and other green elements.

The designers focused on three main concepts for this design: Renewable Energy, Self-sufficiency, and Indoor/Outdoor Living. The strategy for the Alwen's Promise design was to use passive strategies to reduce the electrical cooling load for the house while still providing a thermally comfortable environment. they achieved this by isolating specific areas, such as the bedrooms, that are best suited to be mechanically conditioned. These spaces were thermally isolated from the passively cooled spaces by using Structural Insulated Panels . Using SIPs allowed the bedrooms to be cooled in an ultra-efficient manner that reduced heat infiltration from neighboring spaces. The large, communal space featured a raised, slatted floor and rotating doors that directed the breezes through the house. This cross ventilation strategy not only improved air circulation, but also drew cool air out from underneath the slatted floor.

ten designers

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

The legendary Frank Lloyd Wright was well known for his commercial work such as, the Guggenhiem Museum more than his residential work. His praire style was some what influenced by his love for the japanese style, because it captured the essence of natural materials in a rare and beautiful fashion. He was taught that the form of a building should express its underlying function, which i think is something that all designers should have in mind when designing.

JAMES STIRLING

James Stirling was a British architect, born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1926. He received an architectural degree from the University of Liverpool School of Architecture in 1950 and was one of the most influential and important architects of the late 20 th century. He was one of the fist in the 1950's who questioned and subverted the compositional and theoretical precepts of the first Modern Movement.

TADAO ANDO

Born in osaka, japan in 1941. tadao ando is the foundeer of Tadoao Ando Architectural & Associates and has won many prestigous architectural awards such as, the Carlsberg and pritzker prize. One of the first projects to bring international attention to Tadao Ando was his Rokko Housing I, which is situated much further down the slope of the Rokko Moutains than the Koshino house.

RON DAYAN

at a very young age ron dayan knew that he was destined to become a designer. he was known as the sherlock holmes of design because he used holmes methods of detection in his design process. Ron has a firm in los Angeles named Picadilly Designs which works on residential and commercial designing. his company is well known around the country and has beeden featured in numerous articles due to the luxurious designs he creates.

VICTOR HORTA

in my opion i believe that victor horta had to have been one of the best archicteccts ever during his time. He was born on january 6 1861- september 9 1947 in Belgium. he was once described as being "undoubtedly the key European Art Nouveau architect." Horta is one of the most important names in Art Nouveau architecture. the tassel hotel is such an amazing building because of its organic structure which makes it seem alive; i would have to say that he is one of my favorite architects.

OSCAR NIEMEYER

Oscar Niemeyer was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on December 15, 1907. after graduating
from the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro in 1934 Niemeyer workedon a project for about four years with a team of Brazilian architects including Le Corbusier. The Corbusian influence is pretty visible in the early works of Oscar Niemeyer, but as his work progressed he came up with his own style. it was said that harmony, grace, and elegance are the adjectives that are most appropriate to describe his work.

ADOLF LOOS

Adolf Loos was born in austria in1870, and was ranked as one of the most important pioneers of the modern movement in architecture. it was said that his influence was based largely on a few interior designs and a body of controversial essays. Adolf Loos 's buildings were rigorous examples of austrian beauty. His work ranged from conventional country cottages to planar compositions for storefronts and residences. During his early years of practice, his built compositions were little known outside his native country, Austria.

MICHEAL GRAVES

born in Indianapolis, Indiana on july9, 1934. he earned a bachelors degree in the University of Cincinnati and a master's at Harvard University. he is known as one of the New York Five, which is a group of architects whose work appeared in the Museum of Modern Art. Not only did Graves and his firm have earned acclaim for a wide variety of commercial and residential buildings and interior design, but he achieved famed for his domestic house hold items sold at Target. due to an infection of unknown origin graves was left paralyzed from the waist down, but still runs his firm Micheal Graves & Associates.

CHARLES-EDOURAD JEANNERETTE-GRIS

Born in La Chaux-de Fonds, Switzerland on October 6,1887 he studied at the La-Chaux-de-Fonds Art School, where he ened up working aafter he finished school. there, he worked on theoretical architectural studies using modern techniques. Among these was his project for the "Dom-ino" House, which proposed an open floor plan consisting of concrete slabs supported by a minimal number of thin, reinforced concrete columns around the edges, with a stairway providing access to each level on one side of the floor plan. This design became the foundation for most of his architecture for the next ten years. Soon he would begin his own architectural practice with his cousin.

KATIE ANNDERSON

Katie Anderson is a designer and a faculty member of the Interior Design Department at the Academy of Art University, who mainly does residential design. she traveled extensively for 4 ½ years before starting her design firm in 1996. She visited many historical architectural sites in Europe, Central America, Egypt and the Middle East, which shows in her work.
