repurposing abandoned industrial buildings into urban housing has become increasingly popular over the years not only because of its affordability, but also because of the potential that these abandoned buildings have to become so much more. repurposing buildings allows us to preserve historic sites, create housing for people and minimize the amount of waste we would make if we were building a house from scratch.

The roman bathing idea of transitioning from a hot bath(caldarium) to a warm bath(tepidarium) and then finally a cold bath(frigidarium) is what inspired the ideas for my bathing place. for me, the act of transitioning from different pools is a reflection of feelings i wanted the bathers to experience. when the bathers enter the first bath they overcome by a sense of confinement because the room as well as the bath is small and designed to fit one person. this bath is sybolic of how the wheelchair bound bathers feel.
the second bath is longer, yet still gives the feeling of confiement. the width of the second bathing area forces the bather to proceed forward into the next bathing area. when the bather reaches the end of the pool he/she can either proceed to the last pool or turn into the dresing/restrooms on either sides.
the final bathing area is a large room with glass floor to ceiling windows, as well as a toughend glass ceiling, which evokes a sense of freedom. the ramp within the bathing area allows the bather to circulate the pool.
the over all materials within the space are kept to a minimum so that the bather focuses less on the surroundings and focus more on themselves.

What is bathing???

Wathing is the imersion of a body in a fluid, which is practiced for hygiene, religious, or therapeutic purposes.

for me bathing is so much more than that. its about escaping from the stresses of daily life for a while to clear the body mmind and soul. its about focusing one ones self and only ones self, leaving behind all worries.

The roman bathing experience

The Roman, Greek, and Egyptian baths were known as temples of beauty, much like those from Atlantean times, and many therapies were developed to either heal or beautify those who entered through their doors. The Romans were believed to be the first who used different coloured plasters for specific ailments.

Public bathing was a central part of Roman culture that was introduced throughout the territories they conquered. While the size and complexity of baths varied greatly, the principal features included an apodyterium (changing room); a caldarium (hot room), heated by hot air from hypocausts under the floor; and a frigidarium (cold room). Baths might also include a tepidarium (warm room), a laconium (steam bath), as well as exercise areas, covered walkways, club rooms, and other places for social gathering.

There were several parts to a typical Roman bathing complex:

* Apodyterium – dressing room, where the bather’s clothing was stored in cabinets and guarded by a slave
* Palaestra – an outdoor courtyard where the bather exercised, swam, or played games
* Tepidarium – a warm pool
* Caldarium – a hot pool, similar to a modern sauna
* Frigidarium – a cold pool

There are pros and cons to everything. After reading Computing in Architectural Design, i have fallen into a love hate relationship with computer programs used for our field of work.

The programs we use now have com a long way since their first appearance in the design world; and although they serve to benifit us by accurately conveying ideas, i feel that it has dumbed us down as designers quite a bit.

if we look back on the great pioneers of design we can see that the products of their ideas were built without the help of technology. every calculation made was all done using the brain, not some high tech calculator, and the plans to their designs came out quite accurate. Because we live such fast paced lives, the technology we have is necessary in order to get things done quicker and meet dead lines, but i feel that for the most part design has become less of an art and more about punching numbers in and clicking buttons to get an image to pop up on your computer screen.

i might be thinking to the extremes when it comes to technology, but if we continue using technology to the point where it is no longer just an aid, but a crutch; then who's not to say that some day in the future technology will become so advanced that it can do without us.

THE THREE R'S

when i first got the assignment i thought it to be quite interesting because of the fact that the public bus was my main way of getting around town my freshmen year. As we were sitting in the class after we got the asssignment i heard alot of people talking about having to get on the bus and how worried they were because they thought it was dangerous.

I decided to go with a small group of friends on the bus and when we got to the bus stop we everyone else was pretty excited about their fist ride on GTA. i thought the experience was gonna be the same and it was, but i also started to pay alot more attention to my surrounding then i usually do. when we got on the bus i noticed that we were being examined by the people (most of the people were citizens of lower class or teens without other transportation) already on and it some what made me and some of the other girls feel alittle uncomfortable. while sitting in the back i noticed how certain people were spaced apart, and how they were kind of separated by race.

because i did the riding first, i ended up with a completely differrent view on things than if i had read first. when i was riding through town i payed some attention to what was going on outside the bus; more aof my attention was placed on what was going on in the bus: how the people interacted, who got on and off, and also where people were sitting. as i sat back and observed i questioned the riders' actions and decision of where to sit.

as i read the excerpt posted on e-reserve i was astonished by what i read. i already knew about all the sit-ins and how students of color were denied were denied entrance to caucasian schools, because of their race; even though the schools were in walking distance from their homes. it made me quite upset to know that people would treat others in such a manner to intentionally hurt someone; it was mind boggling. i was also amazed by the people who decided to make a difference, and were determined enough for their courage to not give up until change was made.

after reading and riding, i feel that even though we have come a long way from the day of sit-ins and segregation, we still have a long way to go. although segregation no longer legally exists; in the minds of some it still does. being on the bus and examing the people, not only could i feel that racial tension from the other passengers, but it was also seen.

well i dont think i had a crazier week than last week. i just recently started my new job as an RA in gray so its been hard trying to balance everything.....i would say it was a pretty stressful week because i had all this work to do and most of my books for class arent here yet. working in groups was kind of difficult due to work schedules and lack of communication after class. i think that things will get easier once i calm down and realize its not that hard......organization is key.....

when we started this project i was kind of worried because i had never been in a wood shop before. i knew that i wanted my project to be usable after it was done so i came up with a small simple shelf/ divider so that i can keep my desk organized. i think that i did pretty well for my first time in the wood shop and i ended up with something i wanted. i tried doing the project a second time and completely messed it up so i ended up using the first one as my final project.

Japanese houses have thin walls because of the mild climate and overlapping, slanted, and slightly curved roofs because of the fact that there is plenty of rain especially during early summer. Timber is the traditional building material for Japanese houses. It makes them airy which is important during the humid summer months. The disadvantages are that the houses can be damaged easily by earthquakes and fires. Today, concrete and steel are, of course, widely used as well. the interiors are usually simple and use eath tone colors to give the inside a warm and welcoming feeling.

In the late 19th century, Ponce developed its own blend of Spanish Creole and neoclassical architecture called Ponce Creole. It is characterized by the use of Corinthian columns, wrought-iron balconies, stucco siding, arched entrances, and gas lamps. It was named Creole because it reminded some of New Orleans's French Quarter. The wealth from Ponce's sugarcane industry financed most of the elegantly ornamented buildings. this syle can also be seen in other South American countries. the style of architecture is also visible in some of our states such as Florida, Texas, and California.

The Indonesian architecture is is reflection of the diversity that has changed the country.The cultural changes that affected the architecture and style of Indonesia was brought about by invaders, merchants, and traders that came to Indonesia. The traditional architecture is significantly influenced by the Chinese and Arabian architecture.
Indonesian inspired homes incorporate a lot of wood on furniture and the houses with beautiful intricate designs. ceramics and altar pieces are Chinese inspired and embellished in different jewels. fabrics carpets and other interior artifact are full f color making rooms vibrant and exciting. purple is one of the colors that is used often in furnishing. in this country the style is quite different from ours because less isn't more, more is more.

all off the first are done in contour, the top one has a bit of cross hatching that i thought i would add.
the drawings in the center have some crosshatching. i tried to really focus on the detail of the leaf in these three. the first one in the center also includes some stippling.
all of the images on the right are done in blind contour. i think that i have made some great progress on this technique because i dont worry anymore about my image looking real because its not suppose to.

i'm not sure what this ad is trying to sell because i cant read the fine print but the arrows on the page is what got me to want to know what this is about the red lines keep my eyes moving on the page, which makes me look at the image and text, and the finally the name of the product.
first of all who wouldn't overlook this advertisement. displaying phrases that sound pleasing will get anyones attention. the image in the background give the sense that this is a great job offer because of the relaxing image. they also added the amount of money to draw people into falling for their ad.

i like this graphic advertisement due to the fact that it was kept simple. the name in the center catches my attention and i don't get distracted by other images. advertisers use this technique so that you focus on the name and you remember it
i think it is interesting how advertisers are finding new places to place their ads in hopes of gaining consumers. i think its a neat idea to put ads on the sleeves for coffee cups because it a change from those plain brown ones. i'm sure if someone hand me a coffee cup with a cool sleeve that i would be curious to see whats on it.
at first the image caught my eye because of the man on the advertisement. i think that this image is meant to get the attention of women so that we will buy their product. something that i thought was interesting about this advertisement was that it had the small lines that pointed to the center where the product name is. i thought that was a great way of leading the eye to whats important.
in class we learned about how to layout a magazine and this image caught my eye because it lined the squares up creating an imaginary line that catches our attention. another thing that was great about this was the use of color and its arrangement in a pattern. it kind of reminds me of a checker board.
i really did not like this graphic image due to the fact that it had to many things going on which made it feel too busy. if a fan for subtle graphics with some arrangement to make it feel organized. this image really hurts my eyes just looking at it.

this image of the absolute vodka is interesting due to the fact that they dressed the vodka in jewelery, which makes a silent statement that this type of vodka is for people with class and money. it also expresses that if you drink this you have attitude. the cirlce of light in the background is what makes the image stand out and draws my eye to the product.

the use of these two colors together is becoming really popular in graphic media due to the fact the the colors stand out against each other. the orange in the center of the advertisement is darker than the ones on the edge of the ad, which makes me focus more on whats in the center.

i think that thing thing that caught my attention about this image was the colors used. the blue in the back ground really made the somewhat yellow color of the camel stand out. i suppose another reason i noticed this image was because of the camel which is the well known symbol for the camel cigs. i thought it was interesting how they used the format that cigarette companies always use to catch the attention of a certain group.

i think that these buildings complement each other really well. it is interesting to see all of these buildings together, creating an image that is very pleasing to the eye. i think that if these three buildings weren't near each other creating this great image, then the scene wouldn't be as eye catching.

im not sure what the name of this building is called, but i do know that it is located in london, england. this building caught my attention, but not in a good way. i think that the shape of the building is quite interesting; the design is what throws me off. it reminds me of a wedding cake, the building would ave been better off without that design on the front.

the wind scraper

this building has an amazing design to it. the deigner of this building, which has not yet been built, wanted a building that had a constantly changing view. each floor will rotate in different directions to give it its unique images.
